lowkey: critical coding club is first and foremost a coding club - a series of hangouts for anyone who wants to write computer programs with other people. Whether you're new or experienced, need inspiration, or just want to throw on headphones and hack, you are welcome to join. Expect it to be laid-back and self-organised outside usual hierarchies: study groups, spontaneous pair programming, parallel working/body doubling, or just folks with laptops.
In lowkey we are focused on creating a space for diverse coding practices and building a community outside the usual institutions and sites with temporary contracts. E.g., academic institutions, companies with ethical compromises, or "expert" meetups. Through the lens of critical technical practice, we are also open to address politics and social issues tied to coding, but rather than discussing them in the abstract, we focus on integrating this into our practice of coding.
We recognise the historically inequitable social reality of software and the patriarchal and capitalist structures and behaviours within it. We aim for an inclusive and soft space as a disruptive action to change this history. This event is inspired by community coding events happening all over the globe, and can be considered a friendly fork of Calm Coding by Varia in Rotterdam.

In line with our ethos as an anti-capitalist and critical coding club, we are an AI Free Zone. Being an AI Free Zone assists us in creating a space for our critical coding practices to thrive, in expanding the ideas of what an AI Free Zone can be, and in collectively examining what boundaries actually constitute such a zone.
The answer to a question is never "I just asked an AI to do it" or "just ask an AI". We avoid policing each other, to preserve a soft environment and avoid social pressure. But similarly to the mechanisms of our social rules, we do expect each other to avoid sucking the air out of the room by discussing AI-related topics endlessly. If someone points it out, apologise and move on.
Note: Not all ML (Machine Learning) tools are intended to be targeted by this, but it's generally a distinction based on "Generative AI" such as LLMs (Large Language Models) versus task-specific ML models such as OCR (Optical Character Recognition) or speech-to-text. If in doubt, feel free to ask someone in the space.
AI Free Zone is a part of the wider AI abolitionist movement.
